Gilbert and Ellice Islands (Native Laws) Regulation 1912

UNITED KINGDOM

KING'S REGULATION

TO CONFIRM THE OBSERVANCE OF THE NATIVE LAWS
OF THE GILBERT AND ELLICE ISLANDS PROTECTORATE.


Made by His Britannic Majesty's High Commissioner for the Western Pacific in accordance with the provisions of the Pacific Order in Council, 1893.

In the name of His Majesty, George the Fifth, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland and of the British Dominions beyond the Seas King, Defender of the Faith, Emperor of India.

Short title.
1. This Regulation may be cited as the Gilbert and Ellice Islands (Native Laws) Regulation, 1912.

Observance of native laws of Gilbert and Ellice Islands.
2.-(1) Subject to the terms and provisions of any Regulations now in force or hereafter to be made, the native laws of the Gilbert Islands and the Ellice Islands passed in the year eighteen hundred and ninety-four and any subsequent amendment of the same now in force in the said islands and known respectively as the Native Laws of the Gilbert Islands Protectorate and the Native Laws of the Ellice Islands Protectorate, and the powers, duties and obligations of persons thereby created and prescribed, shall be observed and performed by the natives of the said islands.

Validation.
(2) All acts, deeds and things hitherto done under and in accordance with the provisions of the said native laws are hereby declared to have been lawful and valid.

Sentences of death.
3. A sentence of death passed under the native laws in the last preceding section mentioned shall not be executed without the authority of the High Commissioner for the Western Pacific, and the High Commissioner may annul the sentence and, in lieu of death, prescribe some less punishment.
