AN ACT TO AMEND THE KIRIBATI NATIONAL HONOURS AND AWARDS ACT (No. 1 of 1989)
Commencement
1996
MADE by the Maneaba ni Maungatabu and assented to by the Beretitenti.
Short title
1. This Act may be cited as the Kiribati National Honours and Awards (Amendment) Act 1996.
Amendment of section 3
2. Section 3 of the Kiribati National Honours and Awards Act 1989 (No 1 of 1989) in this Act referred to as "the principal Act" is amended by adding new subsections (3) and 4) as follows -
"(3) The Beretitenti, acting in accordance with the advice of the Cabinet, after consultation with the Commission, shall have power by order in writing to amend any or all of the provisions of the Schedule.
(4) The Order made under subsection (3) shall be laid before the Maneaba ni Maungatabu within forty eight hours of the day on which the next sitting or meeting of the Maneaba ni Maungatabu commences."
Amendment of section 4
3. Section 4 of the principal Act is amended in subsection (3) by inserting the words "sitting or" between the words "next" and "meeting"
in the third line.
Amendment of section 13
4. Section 13 of the principal Ordinance is amended in subsection (1) by repealing the figure "10" appearing in line 8 between the
words "of" and "cents" and substituting the figure "12".

KIRIBATI NATIONAL HONOURS AND AWARDS (AMENDMENT) ACT 1996
EXPLANATORY MEMORANDUM
1. This short Act seeks to amend section 3 of the Kiribati National Honours and Awards Act 1989 by adding two new subsections (3) and (4) to that section.
2. The new subsection (3) empowers the Beretitenti and the Cabinet to amend the Schedule to the Kiribati National Honours and Awards
Act 1989 (section 2).
3. The new subsection (4) on the other hand obliges the Government to inform the Maneaba ni Maungatabu of any change/changes that
the Government might have made to the Schedule by laying a copy of such Order before the Maneaba ni Maungatabu within 48 hours of
commencement of the next sitting or meeting of the Maneaba ni Maungatabu (section 2).
4. The amendment in section 3 enables the Government to lay before the Maneaba ni Maungatabu the names of members of the Commission
either during the sitting or meeting of the Maneaba ni Maungatabu and thus making it consistent with the new subsection (4) of section
3.
