MINIMUM WAGE AND MINIMUM WAGES BOARD REGULATIONS

1. Increase of the national minimum wage rate

The minimum rate of wage of every worker (the national minimum wage rate) shall be increased to VT 8,500 per month.

2. Municipality and other areas

(1) The minimum rate of wage of a worker in an area within a municipality shall be VT 20,000 per month.

(2) The minimum rate of wage of a worker in an area outside a municipality shall be VT 20,000 per month.

3. Agriculture sector

(1) The minimum rate of wage of a seasonal worker in the agriculture sector who belongs to the category of copra cutters shall be 13.5 per cent of the price fixed by the Vanuatu Commodities Marketing Board, in respect of hot air or sun-dried copra.

(2) The minimum rate of wage of a seasonal worker in the agriculture sector who belongs to the category of cocoa cutter shall be 6 per cent of the price fixed by the Vanuatu Commodities Marketing Board, in respect of 1st grade cocoa.

(3) An employer and employee may, having regard to the standard of the maintenance of the plantation and upon mutual agreement vary the rates specified in subregulations (1) and (2).

4. Students and young persons

(1) The minimum rate of wage of the following categories of workers shall be VT 250 per day −

(a) workers who are engaged in student holiday jobs;

(b) workers who are young persons and who are employed on work referred to and in accordance with the provisions of sections 38, 39, 40, 41 and 43 of the Employment Act, Cap. 160.

(2) In this section “student holiday job” means a job in which a student is engaged during his school holidays.
